Strolling down a neglected stretch of waterway between the NIA and the Jewellery Quarter, you can almost hear the old industrial city exhaling oily breaths beneath the weight of its modern usurper. To duck under dark, moss-covered bridges and gaze up at shiny-but-soulless apartments can help put progress in perspective.
